This webinar delves into the complexities of engaging men, particularly white middle- and working-class men, in psychotherapy. Recognizing a gap in our field's understanding of men's psychology, this presentation aims to enhance therapists' multicultural competence by exploring men's internal lives and fears, particularly in their relationships with women. The webinar will present a conceptual framework for understanding these dynamics and offer novel clinical approaches for individual and couples therapy. By examining current empirical research and applying new therapeutic strategies, participants will gain insights into effectively engaging men in treatment and addressing common relationship conflicts through a nuanced understanding of men's fears and needs. This interactive session is designed to empower therapists with both the theoretical knowledge and practical tools necessary for advancing their work with men and couples, thereby improving clinical outcomes.
Qualifications:
Dr. Weiss is a psychologist with over forty years of experience practicing and teaching psychotherapy. He is the award-winning author of four books, including the Amazon best-selling “Hidden in Plain Sight: How Men’s Fears of Women Shape Their Intimate Relationships.” Dr. Weiss lives with his wife and dog on an island in mid-coast Maine and offers consultation online.

- Introduction (20 minutes)
- Conceptualizing the study of men and masculinity as an essential aspect of multicultural competence
- The challenges of working towards an empathic understanding of men's internal lives without condoning interpersonally exploitive or abusive behavior.
- Difficulties of Engaging Men in Treatment (20 minutes)
- Men are socialized to be emotionally self-reliant and to equate being emotional or needing help with femininity.
- Men perceive psychotherapy, and the values expressed therein, as feminizing and, therefore, threatening
III. Importance of Engaging Men in Treatment (20 minutes)
- Men in general, particularly white middle- and working-class men are not doing well; physically, financially, and emotionally.
- Men and loneliness.
- Strategies for Engaging Men in Treatment (50 minutes)
- Therapists educating themselves about the internal lives of men as another form of cultural competency
- Educating men about their fears of women as an underlying cause of individual unhappiness and relationship distress (Weiss, 2021).

- Men are taught to rely on defensiveness and stonewalling as their primary defenses in intimate relationships. Teaching men to forgo withdrawal and how to “lean in” as an alternative.
- Women are socialized to rely on criticism and contempt as their primary defenses in intimate relationships) Teaching women to forgo criticism and learn to be interested in, and empathic towards the internal lives of their partners.
- Case study of a common relationship conflict reconceptualized through the lens of men’s fears of women. (20 minutes)
