Implicit bias , by definition, is not something that is explicitly acknowledged. However, it affects judgment and health care on an unconscious level. This new class will identify social and systemic ramifications of implicit bias , including clinical and ethical implications and its impact on healthcare, the workplace, school settings and related systems. This workshop focuses on implicit biases and how bias can contribute to unconscious attitudes and stereotypes. The goal of the class is to have dialogue about where implicit bias comes from, how it can affect clinical treatment and how can learn to correct for its effects.
Presenter Shane King, LCSW, will define implicit bias, and discuss the roots of implicit bias in our everyday life. We will examine the Continuum of Cultural Competency and the importance of cultural sensitivity. Mr. King is a believer that all growth starts at the end of your comfort zone. This training will present tools and strategies to bring implicit biases into conscious awareness so that participants can learn to change habits and practices that are affected by implicit bias.
Qualifications:
Shane is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with several years of experience in leadership and is the owner of his own private practice Reflective Therapy, LCSW PLLC. He is a psychotherapist practicing trauma informed care, Adjunct lecturer, Trainer, and Clinical Supervisor at Brooklyn College Mental Health Clinic.
He specializes in co-facilitating anti-racist groups, organizing, and teaching structural and systemic racism impact on clients’ mental health. Shane is a facilitator of Leadership and Middle Managers that meets every 2nd Tuesday of month via Zoom where he is leading conversations with other leaders around becoming more equitable, just in striving towards anti-racist practice.
Shane provides consultation as part of the NYC Police Reform and Reinvention Collaborative that is seeking to undo the legacy and harm of racialized policing. Shane is a member of the ACS Coaching Collaborative team that is devoted to building a community committed to coaching.
Learning Objectives:
- Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the concept of implicit bias by providing detailed explanations and examples.
- Critically evaluate the historical, societal, and psychological factors that contribute to the development of implicit bias.
- Assess and critique how implicit bias can influence clinical treatment and healthcare practices, applying this knowledge to real-world scenarios.
