This course will explore the significance of clinical rapport along with consideration trauma-informed and responsive approaches to treatment. Participants will strengthen key clinical skills in areas such as communication, trauma-informed interventions, and cultural sensitivity, all while learning how to create safe, empowering spaces for clients. The course will also address the impact of caregiver stress, offering practical tools for managing burnout and vicarious trauma through self-care strategies that enhance both personal well-being and professional effectiveness.

About the Presenter:
Larissa Theison is a clinician with over 15 years of experience working with children, adults and families who have experienced trauma. She is trained in several evidence-based therapies and has started Caring for Clinicians to help support other clinicians in their journeys.

Agenda:
1. Introduction and Course Objectives: Briefly review clinician information, training, and today’s objectives for training; start with a brief mindfulness activity that is supportive of the lesson topic. (10-15 mins)
2. The Role of Empathy and Active Listening: How deep, non-judgmental listening and empathic engagement can lay the foundation for healing. (10-15 mins)
3. Trauma-Informed Communication: Exploring ways to approach communication that respects and acknowledges the impact of trauma, while also fostering hope and agency. (15-20 mins)
4. Cultural Sensitivity and Awareness: Recognizing how trauma manifests differently across cultures and how to approach care that is sensitive and relevant. (20-30 mins)
5. Vicarious Trauma and Caregiver Self-Care: Equipping providers with the tools to manage their own emotional health, avoiding burnout while maintaining compassion. (15-20 mins)
6. Building Strength-Based Relationships: Exploring how to highlight individual and collective strengths in both therapy and caregiving, which empowers resilience and recovery. (15-20 mins)
7. Incorporating Creative Therapies: A brief review of different evidence-based treatment approaches (DBT, EMDR, TF-CBT, Play Therapy, ACT, Brainspotting, ARC, Narrative) and incorporating ideas re: how art, music, and movement therapy can be used to bridge gaps in communication for trauma survivors, especially those who have difficulty verbalizing their experiences. (30 mins)
